Marking the orchestra's latest collaboration with their conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Philharmonia returns to disc with a leading live performance of two late works by Rachmaninov – the Third Symphony and the Symphonic Dances. This release is third and final in a new series of Rachmaninov’s symphonic works, conducted by Ashkenazy in live performances at London's Royal Festival Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
"Ashkenazy coaxes rich, multi-coloured playing from a Philharmonia at white heat, and the live recording captures the frisson of the occasion. The symphony is done with great love and the Dances, almost another symphony in their ambition and spirit, are fabulously played." Apple Music Editor.
"The Philharmonia is on terrific form, playing with edge and sensitivity, splendour and force, ardour and agility – as befits any particular moment in this wonderful piece, desert-island Rachmaninov for me." Classical Source.
