Philharmonia Week on Classic FM

Classic FM, the UK’s most popular classical music station, is broadcasting a week-long celebration of the Philharmonia Orchestra, to mark 15 years of the Philharmonia as Classic FM’s ‘Orchestra on Tour’. During that time, Classic FM and the Philharmonia have worked together to engage audiences across the UK with live music-making. The week of broadcasts will take place over the course of six nights, from Sunday 8 to Friday 13 April 2018.

Opening on Sunday 8 April at 7pm, David Mellor looks back at the Orchestra's history in his evening programme, and specifically to two early recordings: Sir Laurence Olivier conducting Walton’s Henry V, and a young Bernstein as soloist for Ravel’s jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G.

Then, tune in from 8-10pm from Monday 9 – Friday 13 April to the Full Works Concert, presented by Jane Jones (Monday – Wednesday) and Catherine Bott (Thursday – Friday). Highlights of the week include a historic recording of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto under Otto Klemperer performed by a young Daniel Barenboim (Thursday 12 April), music to mark the centenary of Leonard Bernstein (Tuesday 10 April), and a complete performance of our newly released disc: Rachmaninov’s much-loved Second Symphony, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy (Friday 13 April).
