Bruckner Symphony No. 4, Romantic
Following our performance of Wagner, Mahler and Webern at last year’s Proms, we return with our Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen to perform a programme of Austro-German classics.
Called the ‘Romantic’ by the composer, Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 is as vividly colourful as the composer’s original scenario for the work with its knights, maidens, hunting and dancing. The music emerges from shimmering strings, as the solo horn opening starts an adventure that culminates in a joyous finale for the entire orchestra.
Brahms’s St Anthony Variations provide an opener brimming with life, while the world's leading new operatic soprano, Lise Davidsen, joins us in a sequence of songs by Richard Strauss, including the ecstatic ‘Morgen!’.
