Sibelius Symphony No. 6

Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1

Sibelius Symphony No. 7

As Finland celebrates the centenary of its independence from Russia in 2017, Esa-Pekka Salonen brings the work of two Finnish musical giants to Hamburg’s dazzling Elbphilharmonie - opening the programme, Kaija Saariaho’s Lumière et pesanteur was specially written as a gift for Salonen in 2009, while Sibelius’ distinctive Sixth and Seventh symphonies were shaped by the culture of the composer’s homeland. In between, Pekka Kuusisto performs Prokofiev’s sparkling Violin Concerto, a piece first premiered only weeks before Finland gained independence in 1917.
