Elgar Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf

Under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis, the Philharmonia returns to the Edinburgh International Festival to perform Elgar’s Viking cantata Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf. Scored for soloists, full chorus and orchestral forces, Elgar found inspiration in an epic poem by H W Longfellow which tells the story of Norwegian King Olaf’s battles with the Norse gods. A rarely performed masterpiece, this explosive work vividly tells the tale of vengeful gods, warring Vikings and doomed love with music from rousing battle scenes to touching love songs.
