World Instruments

The majority of the music performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra stems from the western classical music tradition. Whilst this tradition, and the composers and music it has produced is important many other parts of the world have their own musical cultures. For example, Indian classical music predates the music of Bach and Handel by many centuries and the types of instruments and sounds used are very different from those heard in a symphony orchestra.

These pages, using audio examples, explore music from all corners of the world from the Ragas of the Indian subcontinent through to the the jazz and blues music of North America.
