Alistair Mackie of the Philharmonia Orchestra comments:

No Difference in Range

Interestingly there´s no difference in range between the trumpets. I can´t play any higher on the piccolo trumpet than on the Bb trumpet. As I said in the article about trumpet construction the trumpet amplifies the compression of your lips, and the amount of compression you´ve got depends on your muscle strength and various other factors.

So I can´t get any higher - it´s not a case of ´if you want a really high note write for a smaller trumpet and it will be easier´ - more a case of it being different rather than easier on a different instrument.

 

Precision
The nature of how the notes come out will change with the instrument. It´s hard to get precision up in the high register. 18th Century composers like Bach would write in the high register of the instrument and it became increasingly important to have precision high up and clear attack, so this led to the creation of the small trumpets such as the piccolo trumpet.
