Tips and Tricks

Cormac ó hAodáin offers tips and tricks on horn writing from the player's perspective.

Horn Tips

'For me, the best writers were people like Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart. Brahms was himself a horn player, but they all really understood the horn: the harmonic series, register; stopped notes and how they work well on the instrument. It´s just a dream to sit down and play Brahms, as well as Schubert, Schumann and Wagner, because it´s written so well for the instrument. Richard Strauss too - his father was a horn player and was first horn in the Munich opera, so he played a lot of premieres of Wagner operas. Mahler too.'
