The Orchestra

INTRODUCTION

This section of The Sound Exchange explores the orchestra using Philharmonia players to demonstrate their instruments and hundreds of clips from Philharmonia CDs to show how composers write for the orchestra. There are a wide range of activities and ways to begin exploring the instruments, the sections and the history of the orchestra. Enjoy!

Instruments
In this section each instrument of the orchestra is introduced and explained by Philharmonia Orchestra players. With the help of video and audio clips the players provide the kind of valuable information that composers and arrangers of music need in order to write well for the orchestra. After all, who is the best person to ask if you want to know how high a trombone can play?
