In May 2006 The Philharmonia Orchestra spent five days on a tour of Scotland, visiting Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen and Glasgow (twice!). The tour was the orchestra's first in Scotland for a number of years, and is based around a programme of Russian music, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy and is particularly centered on the music of Shostakovich as part of the anniversary celebrations.
The programmes featured 2 of Shostakovich's most famous concertos: The 2nd Piano Concerto, and the 1st Cello Concerto with two top class soloists - Steven Osborne and Steven Isserlis
The programmes also featured Rachmaninov's Second Symphony, ny, one of the most breathtaking pieces of romantic music ever written.
