Backstage / Scottish Tour

Tour of Scotland

ThistleIn May 2006 The Philharmonia Orchestra spent five days on a tour of Scotland, visiting Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen and Glasgow (twice!).  The tour was the orchestra's first in Scotland for a number of years, and is based around a programme of Russian music, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy and is particularly centered on the music of Shostakovich as part of the anniversary celebrations.

The programmes featured 2 of Shostakovich's most famous concertos: The 2nd Piano Concerto, and the 1st Cello Concerto with two top class soloists - Steven Osborne and Steven Isserlis

Barnaby Robson Co- Principal Clarinet

The programmes also featured Rachmaninov's Second Symphony, ny, one of the most breathtaking pieces of romantic music ever written.

One of the features of the symphony is the clarinet solo in the third movement - we spoke to Barnaby Robson, Joint Principal clarinettist and asked him about this solo: Click here to find out about this and life in the orchestra.
