So what happens in the story of Peter and the Wolf? Here's a rundown...

Peter disobeys his Grandfather by unlocking the gate and going out into the meadow to join his friends, the bird and the duck, who are arguing. Peter notices a cat crawling through the grass towards the unaware bird, so shouts to warn him and the bird flies up into a big tree.

Peter’s Grandfather comes out into the meadow and is angry with Peter for disobeying him, and warns him it is a dangerous place because there are wolves in the forest. His Grandfather leads him back behind the gate and locks it.

As soon as Peter has gone, a wolf comes out of the forest. The cat climbs to safety in the tree, but the duck, in her excitement, jumps out the pond and is caught by the wolf who swallows her in one gulp.

The cat and the bird are now both sitting in the tree (not on the same branch though!), but the wolf is walking round and round watching then with greedy eyes.

Peter, who is still behind the locked gate, has been watching all this going on. He gets a strong rope and climbs the high stone wall. One of the branches of the tree stretches out to the wall so Peter climbs lightly onto it.

Peter tells the bird to fly down and circle the wolf’s head, Meanwhile, Peter makes a lasso and catches the wolf by his tail.

Just then, hunters come out of the forest following the wolf’s trail, shooting as they come, but Peter tells them to stop shooting as he and the bird have caught the wolf and suggests they take him to the zoo.

As the procession leads the wolf to the zoo, if they listen carefully, they can hear the duck quacking inside the wolf, because, in his hurry, he had swallowed her whole!
