James Clark, Violin

James Clark

In a varied and high profile career, James Clark has worked with many of the world's leading musicians as leader of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

His many interests in chamber music have included membership of the Endelion Quartet and the Raphael Ensemble with whom he has recorded several highly acclaimed discs. He has also appeared as guest leader with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the Nash Ensemble. His successful partnership with pianist Richard McMahon has produced over twenty radio broadcasts and recitals all over Britain.

James Clark began his musical career as a chorister at King's College Cambridge, singing as treble soloist at the famous service of Nine Lessons and Carols and he went on to study both singing and violin at the Royal College of Music in London.

Maya Iwabuchi, Violin

Maya Iwabuchi

Maya Iwabuchi was born in Japan, and began violin lessons at the age of two. Her principal teachers were Alice Schoenfeld at the University of Southern California, and Rodney Friend at the Royal College of Music in London.

Maya has enjoyed a diverse career as a violinist since her first solo concert at the age of five. Her solo performances with many orchestras include appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. In 1998, she gave the UK premiere of Czeslaw Marek's Serenade with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Chichester and Aldeburgh festivals. The Strad praised her performance of Elliot Carter's Duo in the South Bank Centre Park Lane series as 'simply brilliant', and the Times reviewed her Wigmore Hall appearance in 2000 as 'gorgeous'. A sought-after chamber musician, she has participated in festivals such as the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, Cornwall, and Music in Blair Atholl, Scotland. In 2001, she toured with the Vellinger Quartet, including an engagement at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, receiving much critical acclaim. She is regularly invited to play with the Mobius Ensemble.

Maya currently holds the post of Leader of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Julian Milone

As a violinist Julian Milone plays in the Philharmonia Orchestra but he is also an accomplished composer and arranger with many performances to his name including works played by the Philharmonia Orchestra in concerts conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy in New York, Washington and Moscow and Mikhail Pletnev in London and Leicester. Julian Milone´s arrangements can be heard on several recordings including The London Violin Sound and The London Viola Sound, and last year, his orchestration of Tchaikovsky´s “Seasons” was recorded live in Tokyo´s Suntory Hall for release on CD. Recent compositions include a Partita for viola & cello, commissioned by the University of New South Wales, Australia, “Passacaglia for Frei Otto” for trumpet and string quartet, commissioned by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), and “En Coulisses”, a piece for 12 solo violins, which had its premiere at London´s Wigmore Hall in March 2004, with members of the Philharmonia under the direction of the works dedicatee, violinist Gil Shaham. Recent projects include his latest commission, a Quartet for bassoon, violin, viola and ´cello called Dedyushka and arranging the music for the recent wedding celebrations of Prince Charles at Windsor Castle

Neil Tarlton, Double Bass

Neil Tarlton

After being a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal Manchester College of Music and a member of the National Youth Orchestra, Neil Tarlton studied at the Royal College of Music in London, with Professor Adrian Beers and John Gray. During this period he played principal bass with Scottish Opera and appeared frequently as a guest principal with the Northern Sinfonia. After college he played with all the major symphony orchestras in London and chamber orchestras such as the London Mozart Players with Harry Blech, English Chamber Orchestra and the Philomusica of London, and because ´first extra´ with the New Philharmonia. In 1976 he joined the BBC Welsh Symphony as principal bass and returned to the Philharmonia as a full member in 1979, becoming Principal bass there in 1991. Neil plays chamber music as often as possible with the Soloists of the Philharmonia, the Razumovsky Ensemble, and The Hermitage Trio. His transcription of Sevcik´s School of Bowing Technique Op.2 was published in 1991 and more recently, ´Beginning Scales on the Double Bass´, which has been described as ´the missing link in bass teaching´. He is a Professor at the Royal College of Music.
