Elgar composed his Violin Concerto for Fritz Kreisler, who premièred the work in November 1910. As with the later Cello Concerto, it is a very personal and introspective work, although it still requires real virtuosity on the part of the soloist. The tender and often melancholic mood of the concerto ends in a more optimistic frame with a vivacious march theme in the third movement. Whilst composing the work, Elgar wrote to a friend 'It's good! Awfully emotional! Too emotional, but I love it.'
