With Brahms’s and Beethoven’s works, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is considered to be one of the greatest violin concertos ever written. The soloist and orchestra work extremely closely together, right from the very opening where two bars of urgent tremolo from the orchestra introduces the violin's searching melody. This work demands both technical virtuosity and complete emotional engagement from the soloist.
