Mahler's late musical works are often associated with the idea of 'farewell'; after the première of his Ninth Symphony this was cemented, with one critic writing 'if you want to learn to weep you should listen to the first movement of the Ninth'. The finale is painfully beautiful, ending in a fragile intensity disappearing into silence. This recording is conducted by the Philharmonia's Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen.
