Schubert's Symphony No. 9 is known as 'The Great', partly to distinguish it from his other symphony in the same key, and partly because in it he set out to compose a 'grand' symphony on the scale of Beethoven's recent works. The work is full of the melodic inventiveness for which Schubert is so well known along with many of his other trademark musical devices: for example the second movement opens with a phrase for cellos which turns out simply to be the accompaniment to the actual main theme. The finale is an exhilarating tarantella.
