The reasons for Schubert leaving this symphony incomplete are unknown. The first two movements were completed in November 1822, although the work then went unperformed for four decades. The second theme of the first movement is perhaps the most famous melody ever composed by Schubert and is warmly lyrical, although it is later followed by dramatic and stormy outbursts.
