Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is one of the most famous pieces of classical music in the repertoire. The symphony is on an enormous scale and is full of Beethoven's musical innovations, right from the very first note with a bare fifth emerging out of silence before building to a full statement of the first theme. The finale, incorporating the Ode to Joy, is a huge choral peroration; and the symphony seems to summarise Beethoven's entire compositional career as well as his philosophy on life.
