Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony was inspired by familiar themes: according to the composer the introduction to the first movement represented 'Complete resignation before Fate'. Yet by the time the work reaches its finale, the pessimistic minor-key opening has transformed into a blazing major-key triumph. The third movement, a Valse, conjures up the delicate world of Tchaikovsky's writing for ballet.
