Schubert's Symphony No. 5 was written in 1816, when the composer was only 19 years old. It is rooted in the musical world of Mozart and Haydn and is one of his sunniest works, embodying all the optimism and energy of youth. It is scored for a very small orchestra, perhaps due to the circumstances of its first performance by an amateur orchestra at the house of one of Schubert's friends.
