Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 was composed in 1806. The cantabile slow movement is one of Beethoven's greatest: Berlioz said of it, 'One is seized from the first bars with an emotion that by the end becomes shattering in its intensity!'. Its emotional tension is soon lightened by the Minuet and Trio, and the work ends with a finale that is almost a perpetuum mobile in its constant rhythmic drive.
