Schubert composed his Symphony No. 2 at the age of 17, and it is on a much grander scale than his First Symphony. The first movement has an unusual structure: unlike the typical sonata form of most opening symphonic movements of the time, Schubert opens with three distinct expositions and false repeats. He followed a similar plan in the finale, along with a second subject that echoes the beginning of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. Whatever its formal structure, this is an enchanting and energetic work.
