Schubert's Piano Sonata in A, D664, is part of his final group of three piano sonatas; regarded as his masterpieces and written in the last months of his life, they are overcast by the composer's own knowledge of the imminence of his death. The philosopher Theodor Adorno described Schubert's last sonatas as having a "landscape-like quality" because of the intensity of the emotional terrain that they occupy. This performance was recorded as part of an all-Schubert concert with András Schiff in 2007.
