Mendelssohn first read A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1826, and began work on his Overture immediately. It encapsulates Shakespeare's story in miniature, with the sparkling sounds of the fairies, the ceremonial theme of the court, and the lyrical theme of the lovers. This recording is conducted by the Philharmonia's former Principal Guest Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras.
