Shostakovich composed his Fifth Symphony in a style chosen to fit into the artistic ideals of the Soviet regime of the 1930s. Hence the work is deliberately Classical in style, strongly influenced by Beethoven and Mahler. This recording is conducted by the Philharmonia's Conductor Laureate, Vladimir Ashkenazy.
