Elgar's concert overture Froissart was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival in 1890; it was the composer's first work for a large orchestra. It was inspired by the 14th-century tales of Jean Froissart; in fact Elgar wrote on the title page of the original manuscript 'When Chivalry lifted up her lance on high', and the work evokes moods of chivalry and heroism.
