Sibelius wrote music to accompany a series of tableaux to celebrate Finland’s past. Finlandia is the last tableau and was adapted by Sibelius into an independent orchestral piece, which rapidly became his most popular work. Most of the work is rousing and stormy, but towards the end a serene hymnlike melody is heard.
