Beethoven's incidental music for Egmont was intended to be performed at the first Viennese performance of Goethe's play in 1810. However the score wasn't completed in time, and the music wasn't performed until the fourth performance of the play. Egmont is about a Flemish soldier and statesman who was sentenced to death for his fight against oppression; Beethoven's music, including this Overture, reflects the heroism of the protagonist, and there are strong echoes of his music for Fidelio.
