The Nutcracker is the last of Tchaikovsky's great trilogy of ballets, mostly composed on his return from his tour of American. On the course of his trip he discovered the celesta, which had just been invented in Paris. Tchaikovsky's score makes great use of this new instrument, particularly in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy: the choreographer, Marius Petipa, wanted the effect of 'drops of water shooting out of fountains', which is certainly created in this sparkling, glittering music.
