Elgar composed his Cello Concerto in 1918/19, and the composer's nostalgia for the pre-World War I days can clearly be heard in the beautiful lament of the opening movement and in the yearning slow movement. These movements are separated by a quicksilver scherzo; the work ends in high spirits but the lasting impression is, in the words of a contemporary critic, 'the realisation of a fine spirit's lifelong wistful brooding upon the loveliness of earth'.
