Elgar attributed his inspiration for the central theme of the Violin Concerto to his muse, Alice Stuart-Wortley, who he nicknamed "Windflower".
The concerto is inscribed with a quote from the 18th century novelist and playwright Alain-Rene Lesage, "Here is enshrined the soul of _ _ _ _ _". The identity of the dedicatee has inspired many theories, but Elgar never revealed his or her identity.
The concerto, which was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society, was premiered by Fritz Kreisler at the Queen's Hall in London in November 1910.
