Benedict Nelson BARITONE

Benedict Nelson studied at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the UK National Opera Studio.

Past highlights include the title role Billy Budd and Belcore L’elisir d’amore, both for English National Opera, as well as concert appereances with City of Birmingham Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, Basel Chamber, Royal Philharmonic and RTÉ Orchestras.

A protegée of Sir Thomas Allen, Nelson’s other recent engagements include his BBC Symphony Orchestra debut under Jiří Bělohlávek singing Brahms’ Requiem, a recording of Britten songs with Malcolm Martineau, Tarquinius Rape of Lucretia for Opéra Angers-Nantes, Tender Land at Opéra de Lyon and the world premiere of The Lion’s Face at the Linbury Studio, Royal Opera House.

In the 2012/13 season Benedict Nelson sang Stranger The Lady from the Sea for the Edinburgh International Festival and Scottish Opera, and the role of Algernon Moncrieff in the UK premiere of Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest at the Royal Opera House. At English National Opera he appeared in Vaughan Williams’s The Pilgrim’s Progress and as Figaro Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Concerts included Brander Damnation de Faust with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Dutoit, Helmsmann Tristan und Isolde with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Donald Runnicles, Britten Canticles at the Royal Opera House and an afternoon solo recital at London’s Wigmore Hall with Malcolm Martineau. Engagements in 13/14 include Ned Keene Peter Grimes for Opéra de Lyon and Opera North and a recital with Roger Vignoles in Madrid.
