Anglo/French mezzo-soprano Anna Stephany is a winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award and the Guildhall Gold Medal and in 2009 represented England in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. 

Born in the North East of England, she is a graduate of King’s College London, The Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio.

In the summer of 2011 Anna sang Annio in David McVicar’s production of La Clemenza di Tito for Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Earlier that year Anna made her debut at Théâtre du Châtelet singing the role of Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, she also made her debut in the United States to critical acclaim in the title role of Charpentier’s Medée with Christian Curnyn and Chicago Opera Theater and with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as Orlovsky Die Fledermaus.

In concert Ms Stephany has appeared with many of the world’s finest orchestras including London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NDR Sinfonieorchester, London Philharmonic Orchestra, CBSO and at the Proms. Anna can also be heard on a number of recordings for the BBC, LSO Live and Wigmore Hall Live labels.

Conductors with whom she has performed include Jaap van Zweden, Thomas Hengelbrock, Sir Colin Davis, Vassily Sinaisky, Andris Nelsons, Sir Charles Mackerras, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, David Zinman, Thierry Fischer, Donald Runnicles, Sir Andrew Davis and David Parry.

Recent engagements include Der Rosenkavalier at the Bolshoi, Elgar’s Sea Pictures with David Parry, Speranza in Orfeo with the Balthasar Neumann Chor, Les Nuits d'été with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales,  Bruckner’s Requiem with the Northern Sinfonia,  Kathleen Ferrier Centenary Concert at the Wigmore Hall, a programme of Handel celebrating the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Serse with Christian Curnyn and Early Opera Company in a recording for Chandos , Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky at Royal Festival Hall, a late night BBC 6Music Prom at the Royal Albert Hall performing Berio’s O King with the London Sinfonietta, and concerts of Handel arias with Orchestra La Scintilla in Bonn.

Anna Stephany is a member of the ensemble at Opernhaus Zürich where roles last season included Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro, Dorabella Cosi fan Tutte and Lola Cavalleria Rusticana. This season she sings Siébel Faust, Nicklausse Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Minerva Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.  She will also sing B Minor Mass with Pygmalion Ensemble in Bordeaux, Toulouse and at the Salle Pleyel,  Beethoven 9th Symphony with the LPO at the Barbican and Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Beethoven Mass in C with the LSO and a return to the Bolshoi for further performances of Der Rosenkavalier.  Future plans include Octavian Der Rosenkavalier for the Royal Swedish Opera,  La demoiselle élue with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Haydn’s Seven Last Words on the Cross with Musikkollegium Winterthur.
