Alistair was born in Ayrshire, Scotland on 9 March 1967 and was educated at the Music school of Douglas Academy and the University of Surrey. On graduating his first employment was as a lay clerk in the choir of Guildford Cathedral before spending 18 months working for the Orchestre Symphonique d'Europe in Paris.

He has been a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra since 1996 where he holds the position of Joint Principal Trumpet. Alistair is also currently Principal Trumpet in András Schiff's own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, and was formerly Principal Trumpet in the Orchestra of Glyndebourne Touring Opera. He works regularly with the London Sinfonietta, Lontano and many of London's other orchestras and has performed on many soundtracks for film and television.

In 1990 Alistair became the first brass player to win the wind section of the Royal Overseas League Music competition which led to many solo engagements. He has performed as a soloist with many orchestras including the Philharmonia, London Mozart Players, London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed many recitals throughout the UK, France and Switzerland.

Alistair is married with two children and lives in Woking, Surrey.
