Outside of the orchestra, Julian plays regularly with pianist Andràs Schiff in his chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, has performed several ‘Violin Ensemble’ concerts with violinist Gil Shaham and has coached chamber ensembles at both the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music. As composer and arranger he has had pieces played by numerous orchestras throughout the world directed by conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Vernon Handley, Mikael Pletnev, David Robertson and Carl Davis. He has had commissions from the RIBA, the Dickens Festival and the Philharmonia Orchestra and has had many performances including those at the Wigmore Hall, Rochester Cathedral and the V&A museum. On disc, he has just completed his second arranging project for EMI. This was with cellist Natalie Clein and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for their recent Elgar disc. His first was for trumpeter Alison Balsom and was recorded with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner. On film, Julian’s work can be heard on the recent documentary “4” (based on the Four Seasons), on the broadcast of Prince Charles’ wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles for which he arranged the music and on the film “Hotel Splendide” and in 2009 his version of Libertango was played by Alison Balsom and the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
A project he is very passionate about is the Violin Ensemble. Having taken the idea and some arrangements some years ago to Cala Records, The London Violin Sound (48 violins and 1 contrabass!) was formed, sadly solely for the ensuing sessions. Since then, he has formed his own ensemble mainly from young soloists and Philharmonia players, and directed concerts with both the small (4 vlns) and large (12 vlns) groups at, amongst other places, the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Leicester’s De Montfort Hall and the Welsh Millennium Centre. Abroad, there have been performances of his quintet arrangements at both the Aspen (with Gil Shaham) and La Jolla (with violinist Cho-Liang Lin) Festivals in the U.S. and in Amsterdam and Cape Town, South Africa with violinists Ivry Gitlis and Daniel Rowland with future concerts planned with Janine Jansen at her festival in Dubrovnik.
