Michael Hurwitz CELLO

Michael Hurwitz started playing the cello at the age of eight and studied with Christopher Bunting, Keith Harvey, Amaryllis Fleming and Derek Simpson. From 1970 he was a member of the Amphion String Quartet with whom he recorded and toured extensively until they disbanded in 1984. Michael has always been involved in teaching and for many years was a professor at Trinity College of Music.

Michael joined the Philharmonia as no. 4 cello in 1989 and after 17 years decided to apply for a job - share as a Section Member to give him flexibility to spend the other half his of life in his second home in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. There he runs a holiday rental house, works in a charity shop and fights with his garden!

Michael has been actively involved in the life of the Philharmonia, serving as a member of the Council for many years and also working closely with the Education Department of the Orchestra since its inception. Michael has recently been appointed Archivist of the Philharmonia.
