At the start of the 2009/10 season, Sokhiev made his critically acclaimed début with the Vienna Philharmonic. Other recent highlights include highly successful débuts with both the Berlin Philharmonic – where the critics hailed him ‘Dirigentenwunderwaffe’ (miracle conductor) – and Rotterdam Philharmonic. Plans for the 2010/11 season include Pique Dame for Vienna State Opera; returns to his regular orchestras including the Finnish Radio, Mahler Chamber and DSO Berlin; and concerts and European touring with the Philharmonia Orchestra, to which he returns each season. His Mariinsky Theatre commitments include many new productions; plans for Toulouse include extensive touring and opera productions at the Théâtre du Capitole.
Sokhiev has worked with the Santa Cecilia, Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, Russian National Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, RAI Turin, La Scala, Bournemouth Symphony and Bayerische Staatsoper orchestras. He has appeared as guest conductor in Strasbourg, Montpellier and Frankfurt; with the Sydney Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Munich Philharmonic, Philharmonique de Radio France and French National orchestras; and for Swedish Radio and Vienna Radio.
Sokhiev made his UK opera début with La bohème for Welsh National Opera in 2002. In 2003 he made his début at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, with the Mariinsky’s Eugene Onegin and the following year at the Aix-en-Provence Festival (Love for Three Oranges). He has recently conducted Pique Dame and Iolanta at the Théâtre du Capitole; and The Fiery Angel and Carmen at the Mariinsky Theatre.
