Born in Virginia, Stephen Gould has quickly emerged as one of Europe’s leading heroic operatic tenors. Since 2004 he sang in, among others, new productions of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt in Berlin conducted by Christian Thielemann and in Vienna conducted by Donald Runnicles, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony conducted by Daniel Barenboim in Berlin and by Hartmut Haenchen in Munich, Tannhäuser with Thielemann in Bayreuth and with Ulf Schirmer in Geneva, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony conducted by Myun-Whun Chung in Paris, Vienna and Budapest, as well as Midas in Die Liebe der Danae in Dresden conducted by Fabio Luisi, Gurrelieder in Berlin and Brussels conducted by Marek Janowski, Erik in Der fliegende Holländer at Vienna State Opera conducted by Seiji Ozawa, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung at Bayreuth Festival conducted by Christian Thielemann. He also appeared in a new production of Tannhäuser in Paris conducted by Seiji Ozawa and a new production of Siegfried conducted by Franz Welser-Möst at Vienna State Opera.
In 2006 he was Erik in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer in Munich conducted by Adam Fischer, made his début as Siegfried in both Siegfried and Götterdämmerung at Bayreuth Festival with Thielemann, sang the title role of Otello in Dresden, Gurrelieder with Kent Nagano in Montreal and Fidelio in Tokyo. He started 2007 in the title role of a new production of Peter Grimes in Dresden.
