He has sung baritone and buffo roles at La Scala, Milan; Deutsche Oper am Rhein; Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris; Bregenz Festival; Vienna Festival; and English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Almeida Opera, Aldeburgh Opera, Grange Park Opera, Garsington Opera and Opera Holland Park. Additionally, he has sung the baritone patter roles in Gilbert and Sullivan at the Savoy Theatre and throughout the UK, Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with D’Oyly Carte, Carl Rosa, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Opera della Luna, Grange Park Opera, The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and others. These include Bunthorne (Patience) at the BBC Proms, a role he has also recorded with D’Oyly Carte.
At the Aldeburgh Festival he has performed Pierrot Lunaire, Enoch Arden, Façade, the title role in Arlecchino, Haushofmeister (Ariadne auf Naxos), Sparrow (The Cricket Recovers) and his own narrations for The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and Peter and the Wolf (with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). He has worked extensively as an actor in theatre, film, television and radio, and has written and translated for stage, screen and opera house: commissions include a new play for Let’s Make An Opera (Britten Estate/Aldeburgh Productions); his critically acclaimed television credits include writing and presenting the drama documentaries A Salaried Wit (about George Grossmith), A Gooseberry Fool (about Oliver Goldsmith) and the five-part series about Gilbert and Sullivan: A Motley Pair (Sky Arts/Capriol Films).
Future engagements include Sir Joseph Porter (HMS Pinafore), which he also directs, for Raymond Gubbay at the Barbican and in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham; Benoit/Alcindoro (La bohème) for English National Opera and Black Minister (Le Grand Macabre) at La Monnaie, Brussels.
