During his school years, Von Eckardstein continued his piano studies in Hannover and in Salzburg with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. After his graduation from high school, he attended the Universität der Künste in Berlin to take lessons with Klaus Hellwig. After getting his degree in 2002, he has continued his studies also at the International Piano Academy Lake Como in Italy.
Von Eckardstein won numerous competitions, both nationally and internationally. Amongst these are the Hamburg Steinway Competition (first prize in 1990), the Incontro Internazionale Giovani Pianisti in Italy (first prize in 1991), the Arthur Schnabel Competition in Berlin (first prize in 1998), the Feruccio Busoni Competition in Bozen (1998), and the ARD Competition in Munich (second prize in 1999). In 2000, von Eckardstein received both the third prize as well as the press-prize and the special prize for best interpretation of contemporary music at the Leeds International Piano Competition. In June 2003 Severin von Eckardstein received the First Prize at the highly prestigious International Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
Since winning in Leeds and Brussels, Severin von Eckardstein performed with many renowned orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchester der Komischen Oper Berlin, Gürzenich Orchester Köln, Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Belgique, deFilharmonie, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentie Orchestra The Hague and the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, conducted by amongst others Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, Jaap van Zweden, Philippe Herreweghe, Claus Peter Flor, Lothar Zagrosek, Markus Stenz, Michel Tabachnik, Walter Weller and Frans Brüggen. In September 2007 Severin von Eckardstein made his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, conducted by Paavo Järvi.
Severin von Eckardstein has given numerous solo recitals, on important stages in the U.S. and Europe. New York (Metropolitan Museum of Art), New Haven Yale School of Music (Horowitz Piano Series), Washington (Kennedy Center), London (Wigmore Hall), Brussels (Palais des Beaux Arts), Salzburg (Mozarteum), and at several occasions during the Master Pianists series in Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), to name a few. He also performed in Canada and Hong Kong and made extensive tours through Korea and Japan. Furthermore, von Eckardstein was invited at many prestigious music festivals: the Miami International Piano Festival, the Ravinia Festival and the Gilmore Festival in the U.S. In Europe at the Klavier Festival Ruhr, Dresdner Musikfestspiele, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Colmar Festival, Chopin Festival Duszniki Zdroj, the International Istanbul Music Festival, the September Festivals of Milan and Montreux and at the Festival International de piano de La Roque d’Anthéron.
Von Eckardstein is a pianist with an amazing versatility and a repertoire ranging from Bach to contemporary music. His most recent CD, released by Dabringhaus & Grimm, contains works by the Russian composer Nikolaj Medtner.
