2012 engagements included Don Giovanni at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin; Il Conte/Nozze di Figaro for his debut at the Cologne Opera; the title role of Sweeney Todd for the Bayerischer Rundfunk, Munich and concerts with Maazel and the Philharmonia (Mahler 8), Vladimir Jurowski and the Dresden Staatskapelle (Auerbach Requiem), Xian Zhang in Milan (Britten War Requiem), Michael Schoenwandt in Amsterdam (Jeths Hotel de Pekin), Donald Runnicles in Glasgow (MacMillan Passion), Paul Goodwin in London (Bach St Matthew Passion) and James Judd at the Vienna Konzerthaus (Elgar The Dream of Gerontius).

Recent concerts include the LSO with Harding and Sir Colin Davis, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Pappano; the Hallé with Elder; the Gabrieli Consort with McCreesh; the Bamberger Symphoniker with Norrington; the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León with Zedda; the Academy of Ancient Music with Paul Daniel and appearances with the City of London Sinfonia; the BBC Symphony and BBC National Orchestra of Wales; the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the CBSO.

At the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden he has sung Sonora (La fanciulla del West), Valvert (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Mr Astley (The Gambler). He returns in 2013 for Mountjoy (Britten’s Gloriana). His many roles at the English National Opera have included Don Giovanni, Il Conte (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo, Marcello (La bohème), Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Silvio (I Pagliacci), Chou-en-Lai (Nixon in China) and Prince Yamadori (Madama Butterfly). Other roles have included Eugene Onegin at Glyndebourne; Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and Belcore (L'Elisir d’amore) at the Welsh National Opera; Demetrius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at Opera North; Don Carlo (La forza del destino) at Opera Holland Park; Lescaut (Manon Lescaut) in Leipzig; Elviro (Serse) for the Royal Swedish Opera; and Yeletsky (Pique Dame), Danilo (Die lustige Witwe); and Ottakar (Der Freischütz) for Opéra de Montpellier.

In the U.S. he is a regular guest at the Philadelphia Opera where his roles include Ford (Falstaff), Germont Pere (La Traviata), and the title role in Gianni Schicchi. He will return in 2013 for his first Papageno. He has also sung Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) in Santa Fe.

A keen recitalist, he has appeared in New York at Carnegie’s Weill Hall; at Wigmore Hall and St John’s Smith Square in London; at the Oxford Lieder Festival and at the Canterbury and Buxton Festivals.

His recordings include Eugene Onegin (extracts) with Pappano (EMI), Les Troyens with the LSO and Sir Colin Davis (LSO Live), Billy Budd with the LSO and Harding (Virgin / EMI); Bellini’s La Straniera with the LPO and Parry (Opera Rara) and Mozart arias with the Classical Opera Company (Sony BMG). His solo recital discs - Quilter songs (Sony BMG), ‘English Love’, the complete Butterworth Songbook and the complete Delius Songbook (Stone Records) – have all received widespread critical acclaim.
