“Leila Josefowicz delivered a wide-screen, 3D interpretation, the colours as bright and vivid as any paint chart but more enticing.”
– London Evening Standard, April 2011

Violinist Leila Josefowicz has won the hearts of audiences around the world with her honest, fresh approach to the repertoire and her dynamic virtuosity. Since her Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 16 she has appeared with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors. A close collaborator with leading composers of the day, Josefowicz is a strong advocate of new music – a characteristic reflected in her diverse programmes and enthusiasm to perform new works. She has also been awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, joining prominent scientists, writers and musicians who have made unique contributions to contemporary life.

Violin concertos have been written especially for Leila Josefowicz by Colin Matthews, Steven Mackey and Esa-Pekka Salonen and Luca Francesconi has recently been commissioned to write a new piece for her. The Salonen concerto was first performed by her with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by the composer before subsequent performances throughout Europe and North America. Josefowicz gave the premiere of Matthews’s Violin Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra before performing the piece with the Orchestre Nationale de Lyon, BBC Symphony and Finnish Radio Symphony orchestras

This season, Leila Josefowicz will perform Concentric Paths, Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto, with ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the latter conducted by the composer. Elsewhere, she will appear with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, and on tour with the Philharmonia Orchestra. In spring 2012 she will also appear in London with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, offering the London premiere of Esa-Pekka’s Violin Concerto as well as the world premiere of a new sonata by Magnus Lindberg in the same concert. During the 2011/12 season Leila Josefowicz appears with the Boston Symphony and San Francisco Symphony orchestras, both with Esa-Pekka Salonen; and returns to the Toronto, Atlanta and Indianapolis Symphony orchestras. This season also sees her become the Philadelphia Orchestra's 2011/12 Artist in Residence.

Recent appearances include performances with The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony orchestras; BBC Symphony and London Symphony orchestras; Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig, Münchner Philharmoniker, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Josefowicz has also released several recordings, notably for the Deutsche Grammophon, Philips/Universal and Warner Classics labels. She has recorded the works of John Adams: most recently The Dharma at Big Sur with the Los Angeles Philharmonic – her second release for DG Concerts on iTunes – and the title track on the Grammy-nominated Road Movies album for Nonesuch. One of her latest releases is a live recording of the Knussen Violin Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer at the BBC Proms.
