Kristine Balanas

Latvian violinist Kristine Balanas began studying the violin aged 7 at her local music school in Dobele with Olita Meldere, later moving to Riga to continue her studies at Emils Darzins Special Music High school with Romans Sne. In 2007 Kristine was invited by Professor Gyorgy Pauk to study on a full scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in London from where she recently graduated with First Class Honours. As well as her degree Kristine received Her Royal Highness Princess Alice the Duchess of Gloucester’s Prize of 2012 for Exemplary Studentship. Kristine has been awarded a further scholarship to continue her studies on the Academy’s Master of Arts postgraduate course. Other awards at the Academy include the John Waterhouse Prize 2009, Mica Comberti Prize 2010, Wolfe Wolfinsohn Prize for string quartet 2010.

Kristine has won prizes in many international competitions. She has won the 1st prize as well as the ‘Virtuoso Prize’ at the 12th International Violin competition in Kloster Schontal and first prize in the National Competition for Violinists, Latvia, in 2004 and 2008. Other prizes include the J & A Beare International Solo Bach Competition in 2010 and at the 30th International Violin Competition Rodolfo Lipizer in 2011 alongside a special prize for the best interpretation of a 20th century violin concerto.

Kristine has participated in master classes with some of the world’s most respected musicians including Vadim Gluzman, Viktor Pykaizen, Petru Munteanu, Thomas Brandis, Koichiro Harada, Pamela Frank, Krzysztof Wegrzyn, Gyorgy Pauk, and most recently with Leonidas Kavakos and Maxim Vengerov.

As a soloist Kristine has performed with numerous orchestras – The Latvian National Orchestra, Vidzemes Chamber Orchestra, Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Slovakian Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, Ashover Festival Orchestra, Royal Society Orchestra, Sinfonietta Riga, Kew Sinfonia, Mumbles Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra ‘’Constantinescu’’, Hertford Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia d’Amici.

She plays a Giovanni Rota violin, made in Cremona in 1808, kindly on loan from the Royal Academy of Music.
