In recognition of his lifelong association with the music of Elgar, Julian Lloyd Webber was elected as President of the Elgar Society in 2009. Julian has also been a Vice-President of the Delius Society for many years and his championship of Delius dates back to 1971 when he included the composer’s Cello Sonata at his London recital début at the Wigmore Hall. He subsequently recorded both Delius’s Sonata and Caprice and Elegy with the composer’s amanuensis Eric Fenby and, in 1982, he made an acclaimed recording of Delius’s Cello Concerto with the Phiharmonia Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley.

Julian’s most recent recording - his arrangements of songs by Delius and John Ireland for cello and piano - with the pianist John Lenehan, is released this month on the Naxos label. Julian Lloyd Webber plays the ‘Barjansky’ Stradivarius cello of c. 1690 – the instrument on which Alexandre Barjansky premiered the Delius Cello Concerto in Vienna on January 31st 1923.
