She has appeared at English National Opera (Street Scene, Clarissa, Princess Ida), on tour throughout the UK as the Mother Abbess in The Sound Of Music, at the Chichester Festival in Robert and Elizabeth, and played leading roles in regional theatres all over the country in My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, Candide, Alice in Wonderland, Nunsense and Carousel, among many others. Above all, however, she is known for her interpretation of the Gilbert & Sullivan major contralto roles, originally for the D’Oyly Carte company, with whom she has also recorded them, and subsequently elsewhere. She has been seen at the Barbican, Bristol Old Vic, and at the Savoy Theatre in London in several of these roles, notably Katisha in The Mikado, Little Buttercup in HMS Pinafore, Dame Carruthers in Yeomen of the Guard and the Fairy Queen in Iolanthe. She has also appeared in G & S Galas in Vancouver, Toronto and Winnipeg, as well as in Dublin. In fact Jill has performed eleven out of the thirteen contralto roles in the G & S canon – an enviable record.
She recently appeared for Holland Park Opera as Juno in a new production of Orpheus in the Underworld, and has also appeared for Raymond Gubbay Ltd in a star-studded concert performance of The Mikado, at both the Barbican and in Birmingham. She is also appearing in numerous venues throughout the UK in her solo show, “In the Dusk with a Light Behind them!” In April 2012 she is to appear with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Dame Carruthers in Yeomen of the Guard at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
