Portrait of Peter Eötvös conducted by the composer and presented by Julian Anderson, in conversation with the composer.
Eötvös’s Chinese Opera is a vivid, dramatic, but purely instrumental evocation of the colours, forms and formalities of its title. A large scale work in several movements, it moves between austere ritual and explosions of rich harmony. Interspersed are several ‘comics’ – lighter moments evoking the theatrical worlds of directors Peter Brook, Luc Bondy and Robert Wilson.
