A pioneering creative partnership between the Philharmonia Orchestra and Soft Touch and working with marginalised teenagers in Leicester, this project is bringing together two expert arts organisations to deliver intensive, skill-enhancing creative activities and performance.

Working in areas within the 5% most deprived in the country, the partnership aims to enhance the lives of teenagers from excluded communities, including African Caribbean, Roma and Slovakian, through intensive creative activities leading to a performance with world-class Philharmonia musicians. Symphonize will offer training in performance, technology, recording, production and composition with experienced professionals, aiming to equip hard-to-reach young people with new skills, confidence, increased social connection, broader horizons, motivation, and a diversion from negative behaviour.

The project will include:

  • Training for leaders and musicians, to include skill sharing and exchanging experience.
  • Outreach ‘taster’ workshops with up to 50 participants aged 11 to 16 plus Philharmonia musicians and Soft Touch workers.
  • An intensive three day project with specialised workshops, creating a new piece and performance with live recording, culminating in spring 2015.
