Virtual Reality: The Virtual Orchestra
The Virtual Orchestra launched Southbank Centre’s Classical Season 2016/17, with the Philharmonia Orchestra moving in to the Royal Festival Hall. There, for two weeks, we ran two digital installations designed to allow the public to experience what it feels like to be inside one of the world’s great orchestras.
Led by the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, these two experiences – Universe of Sound and the Virtual Reality 360 Experience – open up the inner workings of a symphony orchestra to people all ages, whether or not you have ever stepped inside a concert hall. The Virtual Orchestra was produced by the Philharmonia Orchestra and presented in partnership with Southbank Centre.

The Philharmonia and Salonen have been experimenting with VR since early 2015, with a focus on developing a convincing 3D audio experience, to combine with the 3D video to create a more immersive experience. Using bespoke binaural microphones, the viewer will feel the audio move around them as they turn their head, so that they can focus on a particular player, section or hear the detail of the score pages turning.
