On October 1st 2017, the Philharmonia Orchestra played a momentous concert in its opening weekend. Mahler’s Third Symphony is the work that launched Salonen’s 34-year relationship with the Orchestra, when in 1983 he stepped in at late notice – as an unknown young conductor – to conduct the Philharmonia at Royal Festival Hall.

Thanks to funding from the Space, and support from Google (with whom the Philharmonia is now an official partner), the concert was filmed in 2D, VR and ambisonic audio. The 2D version was livestreamed with The Guardian, however the VR version is still in production. This is the Philharmonia’s third VR project to date, and was the catalyst for the Orchestra becoming a formal partner of Google.

The film is due for release in 2018.
