The Philharmonia Orchestra presents around 40 concerts at the Royal Festival Hall each season, where it has been Resident since 1996. In addition to the main evening concerts, the Orchestra also programmes many free events, including recitals by virtuosic young award-winners and the innovative Music of Today series.
Southbank Centre comprises the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room and The Hayward. It shares the site with the independently managed National Theatre, the National Film Theatre and the new Museum of the Moving Image.
Southbank Centre was built in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain and the concert halls were originally funded and managed by the London County Council and their successors, the Greater London Council. The Centre became an independent arts organisation in April 1988 after two years operating as a constituent part of the Arts Council.
